2205 Stainless steel plate is one of the most highly demanded and widely used stainless steel products. It is developed to combat common corrosion problems of stainless steel plates of the 300 series.

What Is 2205 Stainless Steel?

Grade 2205 is one of the most widely used duplex stainless steel. Namely, it has a microstructure of roughly equal amounts of ferrite and austenitic stainless steel, hence the ‘duplex’ description. This structure endows 2205 stainless steel with unique properties, possessing the advantages of both austenitic and ferrite while avoiding their respective disadvantages. Therefore, it possesses high resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion. In a word, 2205 stainless steel plays an important role in industries.

2205 SS Plate Main Properties

Its main and key properties include:

1. Overall Corrosion Resistance

General Corrosion Resistance: Due to its high chromium, medium molybdenum, and small nitrogen contents, the corrosion resistance property of 2205 duplex stainless steel plate is better than 316L and 317L stainless steel plate in most environments.

Localized Corrosion Resistance: The content of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen in 2205 duplex stainless steel plate also provides strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in very oxidizing and acidic solutions.

Stress Corrosion Resistance: The microstructure of the 2205 stainless steel plate helps to improve the stress corrosion cracking of stainless steel.

Anti-corrosion Fatigue: It combines high strength and high corrosion resistance to produce high corrosion fatigue strength. Applications in which processing equipment is susceptible to both an aggressively corrosive environment and to cycle loading can benefit from the 2205 duplex stainless steel plate.

2. Lower Thermal Expansion & Higher Thermal Conductivity

Due to its unique structure, it has lower thermal expansion and higher thermal conductivity than austenitic stainless steel plates.

3. Heat Resistance

Similar to other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 stainless steel plate has good oxidation resistance at high temperatures. However, it is subject to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) even when exposed for short periods of time; therefore, it is not recommended for use above 572°F (300°C). While at low temperatures it has better ductility than the ferritic and martensitic grades.

4. High Strength

In most cases, the yield strength of 2205 stainless plate is about twice that of standard austenitic stainless steel plate. This allows designers to save weight and makes the alloy more cost-competitive when compared to 316L or 317L. Also, the high strength of 2205 steel also makes bending and forming more difficult.

5. Magnetic

Duplex 2205 stainless steel plate is also magnetic, a property that can be used to easily differentiate them from common austenitic grades of stainless steel plate.

6. Weldability

Duplex stainless steel plates can be readily welded using standard welding techniques with excellent results. They are not quite as easily welded as the austenitic stainless steel plates but low thermal expansion in duplex grades reduces distortion and residual stresses after welding.

– In the field of marine & offshore, it can be used in high chloride environments where the application directly comes in contact with chloride. It includes shipbuilding propellers, rudders, shaft seals, pumps, bolts, and other subsea equipment.

– In the field of food processing, it can be used to produce equipment including brewery piping, evaporators, hot liquor tanks, presses, food containers, and so on.

– In the field of pulp and paper making, it can be used to make pulp liquor heaters, digesters, bleaching equipment, brown stock washers, and stock-handling systems.

– In other fields, it can be used to make liquor tanks, drums, bleach washers, rotors, fans, blades, shafts, impellers, press rolls, cargo tanks for ships and trucks, condensers, filters, separators, and effluent scrubbing systems.

*Note that 2205 duplex stainless steel plate is particularly suitable for applications covering the -50°F/+600°F temperature range. Temperatures outside this range may be considered but need some restrictions, particularly for welded structures.

Hot Forming

It is recommended to be done below 600°F. When hot forming is performed, the entire workpiece should be heated uniformly and worked in the range of 1750 to 2250°F. 2205 duplex stainless steel is quite soft at these temperatures and is readily formed. If the temperature is too high, it is subject to hot tearing. If it is lower than this temperature, the austenite will fracture.

Below 1700°F, the intermetallic phases form rapidly due to temperature and deformation effects. Whenever hot forming is done, it should be followed by a full solution anneal at 1900°F minimum and rapid quench to restore phase balance, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Stress relieving is not required or recommended; however, if it must be performed, the material should receive a full solution anneal at 1900°F minimum, followed by rapid cooling or water quenching.

Cold Forming

2205 duplex stainless steel plate can be readily sheared and cold-formed. However, because of the high strength and rapid work hardening of 2205 alloy itself, it requires more cold forming than austenitic steel. Also because of the high strength, the springback factor must be fully considered.

Heat Treatment

2205 duplex stainless steel plate should be annealed between 1868 and 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C), followed by rapid cooling, ideally by water quenching. This treatment can be applied to both solution annealing and stress relieving. Stress relief treatments performed at temperatures below 1900°F tend to result in the precipitation of unwanted metallic or non-metallic phases.

What’s more, duplex 2205 stainless steel plates cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but they can be work hardened.

Machining

The machinability of duplex 2205 stainless steel sheet is low due to its high strength and its cutting speed is almost 20% lower than that of 300 series austenitic stainless steel plates.

Higher cutting forces are required and more rapid tool wear is typical. Some guidelines for enhancing machinability are here for you:

– Use powerful and rigid machines with extremely strong rigid mounting of tools/workpieces.

– Minimize vibration by keeping the tool extension as short as possible.

– Use a nose radius on the tool, no longer than necessary, for carbides that have a sharp edge while still providing adequate strength.

– Design machining sequences to always provide for a depth of cut below the work-hardened layer resulting from the previous passes.

Welding

The weldability of the 2205 stainless steel plate performs well. The welding is not difficult, but its welding procedure needs to be designed. By doing that, after welding, it can maintain a good phase balance state and avoid the precipitation of harmful metal phases or non-metal phases.
